Cyclone season is here.

Storm alert : As the first major low pressure system forms this year off Papua New Guinea, weather forecasters are warning of the most active cyclone season in years for Far North Queensland (The Cairns Post Nov 13, 2007 p.1).

The above image is an Australian Region Visible Satellite Image of the storm off P.N.G. and heading our way. (Source: Image from Japan Meteorological Agency satellite MTSAT-1R via Bureau of Meteorology. Captured: Monday 12 November 2007 22:30 UTC).

Cyclone Larry's catastrophic toll is well remembered in Far North Queensland as it crossed the coast at Innisfail, approximately 6.20am on Monday, March 20, 2006.

There is no room for complacency in the lives of people living in the path of destructive storms.

Follow the links in this article, learn about appropriate preparation for a cyclone and or a flood.

Enjoy the linked images of our geographic area while thinking about the great losses people experience following a severe storm.

Where ever we may be, let us all share a thought for those affected by the forces of nature. Be informed, be prepared, be safe.

Hi Sue,

Our wishes go out to all who may be affected by the potential wild weather this year. My family is spread across Mackay in Queensland, Broome in WA and Darwin in the NT so I appreciate your "early warning system" on how to stay safe :)

Thank you simonem. Lovely to hear from you. It is reassuring to know we can do quite a lot of things, small though they may be, to stay safe.

Today in Cairns it is overcast but the rain has eased off - for awhile any way. With your experience of these Northern geographical areas, you will be aware of the intense rain those of us living to the south of cyclones receive!

Hopefully, we will all stay safe this season.
